The Congress of South African Trade
Union in the Western Cape has
blamed Mayor Patricia de Lille for being sexist.
The South African Municipal Workers
Union took the City to the CCMA last week where it alleged that female
firefighters lose substantial benefits when they fall pregnant.
Cosatu’s Tony Ehrenreich said the
Democratic Alliance’s active promotion of discrimination is one more way the DA
fails to address the apartheid generational disadvantage of working class
communities.
Ehrenreich said this is clearly
sexist and Cosatu will take this to the equality court if the city has not
responded by the 12th of July.
Samwu Regional Secretary Mikel Khumalo
said the matter could not be resolved at the Commission for Conciliation,
Mediation and Arbitration and the certificate of non-resolute was issued which
allows the Union to go further to
the Labour court.
Khumalo added that the City of Cape
Town need to review this because there are
elements of discrimination in their policy.
