Drug business a cause of gangs recruiting younger kids

Community Policing Forum Chairperson Hanif Loonat said it is not surprising that gangs recruit children as young as primary school learners.

This follows the arrest of two Beacon Valley boys aged 13 and 14-years who were arrested last month, for being in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

Loonat said that gang awareness programs in high schools have blocked the reach of gangs hence they recruited a level earlier.

“Drugs business, in monetary terms, is the most lucrative industry in South Africa after oil,” Loonat highlighted.

“These guys are exploiting this niche market; by targeting them younger, and by introducing younger citizens to drugs increases it then gives them the opportunity to increase the wealth they strive for” Loonat added.
