The South African Municipal Workers Union
said the recent Auditor Generals report has confirmed the dire state of
municipalities.
Terence Nombembe revealed that of the 278
municipalities audited only 17 received clean audits in the 2011-2012 financial
year.
Samwu’s Tahir Sema said as long as a
culture exists, where offenders appear to suffer no consequences for their
illegal actions it will continue.
Sema said that they can confirm as the
largest local government union that this is in fact the situation and that it
is possibly worse than what the auditor general has revealed.
“We have been receiving reports of
corruption from every single municipality in every province and therefore we
are encouraging all government departments and the presidency to ensure that
the issue of corruption, nepotism and maladministration are dealt with and the
perpetrators are dealt with harshly,” added Sema.
