29 offices to be opened to process new smart ID cards

Minister of Home Affairs Naledi Pandor said it is all systems go for the ID smart cards.  Three offices were opened on Tuesday to process the new smart cards. 

Minister Pandor said at the end of November the department intends on opening 26 more offices that are currently being renovated so by the end of this year there would be 29 offices in total.

The system is currently be piloted to ensure that the department can deal with larger numbers so therefore the department is starting with about 100 000 batch which is aimed at first time applicants and senior citizens. 

Pandor said the department is busy conducting training programmes for staff because not all their staff are fully technology compliant in terms of computer literacy.
