The African Christian Democratic Party in the Western Cape said on Tuesday that it calls on MEC of Social Development, Albert Fritz to investigate allegations of electrified shields used at a facility for awaiting trial prisons to punish them.

ADCP Provincial Leader Ferlon Christians said such an illegal and inhumane method cannot be allowed to be used on children.

On Tuesday the Wynberg Magistriate Court said the children at Bosasa Horizon Children Centre were not detainees but were placed by the state for care and protection.

Christians added that the ACDP cannot believe that police and correctional services would use electric shields to subdue the youth.

He further said that they do understand that SAPS and the correctional facilities are there to restore and maintain order, but this should at least be done in manner that does not infringe on the rights of children.
