The Commission for Gender Equality has called for a decriminalisation of sex work in South Africa.

CGE this week held a stakeholder engagement in Cape Town with nine non governmental organisations including Sonke Gender Justice and Women’s Legal Centre.

CGE Spokesperson Javu Baloyi said by decriminalising sex work it protects the dignity and rights of sex workers.

Baloyi said the decriminalisation of sex workers and the abuse of constitutional rights cannot go unnoticed anymore.

“We as the commission will make parliament take action to make sure that sex work is decriminalised in the country” Baloyi added.
