Legal Aid to fund victims of Marikana massacre

Legal Aid on Tuesday confirmed that it will be providing funding for the legal representation of the injured and arrested miners in the Marikana Commission of Inquiry.

This is after the North Gauteng High Court on Monday ordered Legal Aid to provide legal funding to over 250 workers in the commission.

Legal Aid National Spokesperson Mpho Phasha said the ruling means that the organisation will have to reduce its assistance to the poor and vulnerable.

Phasha added that they want to reiterate that the decision by the court will have a negative impact on overall funding of legal aid as we are mandated to fund the vulnerable and indigent in the criminal and civil matters.

“We will provide funding but in the long run it will impact on our overall budget of the organisation,” Phasha said
