Western Cape MEC of Community Safety Dan Plato has expressed his concern at recent information which has shown that the number of police reservists used by the SAPS in the province has dropped by almost 90% from 22 000 reservists in 2008 to 2 700 in the last five years.

While at the same time crime has steadily increased.

MEC Plato said 23 out of 29 crime categories have seen an increase in crime.

Ministerial Spokesperson Greg Wagner said that the MEC is aware that people of the province want these police reservists and they want to be police reservists, but they have been prevented from doing so.
