The South African Democratic Teachers Union said it is shocked at the levels of violence in schools in the country.

This follows the murder of a learner at a school in KwaZulu Natal, the incident was caught on camera.

Sadtu Deputy General Secretary Nkosana Dolopi said the safety of both learners and teachers was one of the resolutions adopted after the union’s national general council which was held in Kempton Park over the weekend.

Dolopi said the harshest sentences must be handed out to all those who have conducted themselves in unbecoming kind of way.  The law enforcement agency must assist us to make sure that we maintain law and order at schools, but also to make sure that all those who are at school are safe and secure.

“We are holding a firm view as Sadtu that learning and teaching can only take place in an environment conducive for such learning to take place” Dolopi added.
