Floods caused chaos in Western Cape

The City of Cape Town has called an emergency meeting at its Disaster Management headquarters following severe flooding in the Somerset West and Strand areas.

The Vergelegen Mediclinic in Somerset West has evacuated all its patients after a nearby river burst its banks, flooding the hospital.

Disaster Mangement Spokesperson Onele Ndesi said Kay's Caravan Park in the Strand area has been flooded and they had to move about 20 families, they have been evacuated to the nearest community hall. NGO’s will also provide hot meals and blankets.

"Roads in the Stand area have been affected and part of the N1 and N2 is also affected. Our Traffic officials are still working assisting the motorists and the people in the area.

At this stage rain seems to be dissipated but our officials are still on the ground making sure that any other people found themselves trapped in the floods of last night are assisted with food blankets, clothing,” Ndesi said.
