The Durban Regional Court convicted and sentenced to 18-years in jail a 53-year-old man for raping a 10-year-old girl in 2012.

It is believed that the girl was raped several times by her mother’s boyfriend but the matter was not reported to the police.

KwaZulu Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said victims of rape need not to be afraid of reporting such crimes.

Police Spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said it is alleged that the girl when she told her mother about the rape she was told not to talk about it again and eventually in 2013 the little girl told her older sister and the sister reported the matter to the police.

Zwane said the investigation by the police led to the arrest of the man.
