The draft regulation pertaining to motor vehicle licence fee increase in the province were on Friday gazetted.
Western Cape MEC of Transport and Public Works Robin Carlisle said the proposed increase by 3.4 percent should be subjected to a full public participation process.
MEC Carlisle said the province has not
increased motor vehicle registration and licence fees since 2005.
Ministerial Spokesperson Siphesihle Dube said
the increase is below the inflation rate of 5.9% recorded in February
2014. Revenue generated from these
vehicle licenses goes to building, upgrading and maintaining provincial owned
roads.
Dube added that the money also goes to
assisting municipalities to fund and maintain their strategic roads and also to
continue reducing our maintenance backlog.
