A body of a newborn baby was on Monday found by City of Cape Town drainage workers in New Rest in Gugulethu.

The workers were busy cleaning the sewerage line when the discovery of the baby happened.

Police Spokesperson Thembinkosi Kinana said the police opened a case of concealment of death.

He added that no one has been arrested at this stage and anyone with information in connection to this is requested to contact the SAPS crime stop number 0860010111.

Meanwhile Western Cape MEC of Social Development Albert Fritz said the increase of dumping of babies is becoming a big concern for government.

MEC Fritz said there are other options available for mothers who do not want their babies anymore.  He appealed to young mothers to go to any of the 35 local offices for help.
