The Department of Correctional Services on Thursday said it is improving management of remand detainees with more than 380 awaiting-trial detainees are no longer in remand detention.

Minister of Correctional Services Sibusiso Ndebele has said the issue of remand detainees is a big concern.

Ministerial Spokesperson Logan Maistry said as a result of the implementation of Section 49 G of the Correctional Services Act in July last year, the  number of remand detainees who have been in detention for more than 24 months was reduced from approximately  2200 to 1816 .

“Section 49 G of the Correctional Services Act determines that   a remand detainee may not be detained for a period exceeding two years without such matter having being brought to the attention of the court concerned”  said Maistry.
