Western Cape government said it is concerned about the increase in hijackings especially in the Stellenbosch area. Last year there were seven hijackings in Stellenbosch, the second highest in eight years.

Western Cape MEC of Community Safety Dan Plato said the province has not been associated with high levels of this type of traumatic and often violent crime, but based on recent information and crime stats it is clear that the police need to urgently address this.

Ministerial Spokesperson Greg Wagner said Minister Plato said it appears as if the Stellenbosch area has been particularly hard-hit and based on the current trend this area will see more than double the number of hijackings when compared to last year if SAPS do not arrest those responsible.

“Minister Plato has urged the South African Police Service to take immediate action to prevent any further hijackings in the area,” Wagner added.
