Metrorail in Cape Town has warned that commuters can expect train delays on the central line.

This is after a train derailed just outside Mutual station at a construction site late last night.

Metrorail's regional manager Mthuthuzeli Swartz said the train and railway line were extensively damaged.

Swartz said the train is being moved and the whole line between Mutual and Langa has been closed which is causing the delays.

Swartz added that we want to assure commuters that we as Metrorail we are doing all that we can to make sure that the service returns back to normal in the shortest possible time.

Swarts said what we have done is that all trains that are suppose to go via Mutual are now being diverted via Pinelands so that people can still be able to reach their destinations with minimal disruptions.

"We also have buses that we had put in place as of this morning to transport commuters between Mutual and Langa Swartz added.
