WCED introduces incentives to improve quality of education

The Western Cape Department of Education has introduced several incentives for educators in rural areas to improve the quality of teaching.

The WCED has over the last two years paid out R40.8 million in incentives to educators who teach in rural schools.  

Ministerial Spokesperson Jessica Shelver said this year the WCED have budgeted R21 million in addition to the incentives team the WCED is delighted to announce that the Department of Education has made available additional Funza Lushaka 66 bursaries for the 2015 academic year.

The grade 12 learners who intend studying to a formal qualification in the rural areas will have an opportunity to make use of the available bursaries Shelver added.

Meanwhile through the bursaries from the National Department of Education known as the Funza Lushaka will be given to 66 qualifying learners who have extremely challenging financial circumstances. 

Over the past four years 1, 929 learners in the province have been awarded bursaries from the Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme. 

Ministerial Spokesperson Jessica Shelver the bursary holder on completion of his or her course of study will be required to teach at a school at a rural school for a period of one year for every year which they receive the bursary.

“Minister Schafer would like to encourage all learners who have a passion for teaching to apply for this bursary Shelver added.
