President Zuma pays tribute to author Nadine Gordimer

President Jacob Zuma has sent his condolences on the passing of author Nadine Gordimer who passed away in her sleep on Sunday at the age of 90-years-old. 

President Zuma said South Africa has lost a renowned writer.  Meanwhile Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu described Gordimer as a humble human being. 

Nadine Gordimer was the first South African to win a Nobel Prize in Literature. 

Presidential Spokesperson Mac Maharaj said she was also part of the brave men and women of our country who championed the social role of art, music and literature in advancing the struggle against apartheid and for freedom, equality and democracy.

Maharaj added that South Africa has lost a great patriot, a renowned writer and an outstanding voice for equality and freedom.

“We wish to express, on behalf of government and the entire population, our sincerest words of condolence to her family, friends and the whole spectrum of the literary community.” Maharaj said.
