The Democratic Alliance has called on the
Minister of Police Nkosinathi Nhleko to address the backlog of SAPS members who
are suspected of criminal offences.
This is after a reply to a parliamentary
question revealed that there were 296 police members on suspension as of March
2014 of which 116 received remuneration in the 2013/2014 financial year alone.
DA MP of Police Dianne Kohler Barnard said the
Minister must make it a priority to address the backlog of SAPS members who are
suspected of criminal offences. They reported timeously and their cases fully
prosecuted.
“We also need assurances that those who
commit crime are dismissed immediately.” Barnard added.
She explained that criminal cops do nothing
more than compound the deficiencies of our police service and need to be weeded
out if we are to restore any confidence in the SAPS.
