Western Cape MEC of Social Development Albert Fritz said tackling substance abuse needs a whole-of society approach.

He delivered a speech at the Substance Abuse Impact Forum which was held on Tuesday.

MEC Fritz said the province is at the forefront of the fight against substance abuse.

Over 10 157 people access substance abuse services in the province and the provincial government are planning to expand community based treatment programmes.

MEC Fritz said the continued success of our interventions will also strongly depend on partnerships with communities and citizens, especially parents, taking responsibility for their own and their children’s lives by not abusing drugs and alcohol.

“We will only be able to successfully tackle the scourge of substance abuse, including heroin addiction, if we work better together Fritz added.
