Western Cape MEC of Community Safety, Dan Plato said a specialized gang unit needs to be re-introduced curb gangsterism in our communities.

MEC Plato said he welcomes action done by the South African Police Service against gangsters but also questions whether their deployment is the best solution to curb gangsterism.

He feels that a more focused intervention plan is required to address the spate of killings in our communities.

MEC Plato added, “The current policing units are already thinly stretched due to the continued protest action across the country. A specialized drug and gang unit is needed, as recommended by the National Development Plan, to offer a more targeted approach.”

Moreover, MEC Plato believed the specialized units would appropriately combat gangsterism, contra to the aggravated use of violence employed by ill-equipped police officers currently.
