Western Cape Traffic Authorities over the
weekend conducted 22 roadblocks across the province whereby 2 383 vehicles
were stopped and checked and 1 542 drivers were screened for alcohol.
Provincial Department of Transport and
Public Works Al-Ameen Kafaar said during the roadblocks 22 drivers were
arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Al-Ameen Kafaar said the highest breath
alcohol reading was recording in Oudtshoorn at 1.26 mg, which is basically five
times the legal limit. The highest speed
recorded was 120km zone near Brackenfell.
Meanwhile also during the roadblocks 266
fines were issued for various traffic offences.
Two people were also arrested in Knysna and
Swellendam for reckless and negligent driving.
Over the weekend thirteen fatalities were
recorded on the province roads. Al-Ameen Kafaar said eight of the thirteen
fatalities recorded on the provincial roads were pedestrians.
“Five of them died in the Metropolitan
area, two in the Cape Winelands Overberg region and one at Veldrif. Four drivers were killed in crashes in the Cape Metropolitan area and one
passenger died in an accident in Malmesbury” Kafaar added.
