A 50-year-old fisherman died this morning after he collapsed aboard the Cape fishing trawler in Port Elizabeth.

National Sea Rescue Institute volunteers in PE were activated following a fishing vessel reportedly heading at a speed from fishing grounds towards PE and requesting urgent medical assistance.

NSRI Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said paramedics were put on board but sadly he was declared deceased.

Lambinon said while the fisherman was suspected to have died from a heart attack, police have opened an inquest docket and will investigate.

"The body of the deceased has been handed over to the forensic pathology services” Lambinon added.
