The City of Cape Town’s Traffic Department together with the Public Transport Unit conducted an operation last week called Operation Restore.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said after complaints from the public about the conduct of some public transport operators the city thought to do a campaign aimed for them.

Smith said we arrested 25 drivers, impounded almost 60 taxis and issued over 8 000 traffic fines.  It is extremely important that we ensure that the public transport operators respect the lives of their passengers without whom they would not have business.

“They are an important part of the economy but they must also obey the law as like all other road users are required too” Smith added.

Meanwhile Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security JP Smith said this week is dedicated to the safety belt campaign to ensure that people are wearing their safety belts and especially children.

Smith said there is a high fine of R1 000 if you are not buckling in your child under 14-years. You are legally obligated by law if your car has safety belts both front and rear passengers to use their safety belts, this includes taxi drivers and their passengers.
