Western Cape Premier Helen Zille together
with MEC of Health Theuns Botha on Tuesday launched an in initiative in
Mitchell’s Plain around services of speech language therapy and audiology
services.
The pilot programme is expected to benefit
over 20 000 children who will receive early intervention.
In the country about 17 infants are born
with hearing difficulties and 85% of these infants are also dependent on
the public health sector.
Ministerial Spokesperson Helene Rossouw
said at the moment children are referred to Red Cross War Memorial and the
majority of children that are picked up here are referral to Mitchell’s Plain
and this why this project was piloted in the Mitchell’s Plain area.
“It means that new audiologist will be
appointed at district hospital level and R3.7 million has also been given for
more maintenance and audiology equipment.” Rossouw added.
