The South African Municipal Workers Union in the Western Cape said it is shocked and disappointed at the continued discriminatory practises within the Fire and Rescue Department.

A debate has ensued again about the treatment of female fire-fighters losing their allowances when they become pregnant.

Samwu’s Mikel Khumalo said what they would want to see happening is that, the physical test or assessment that they have put in place, forcing fire fighters to run or go through excessive body fitness be withdrawn and stopped immediately.

“There are a number of our members who have lost those allowances and we are not allowed to work over time because they have failed the assessment test.” Khumalo added.
