16 people died on Western Cape roads

Western Cape Traffic Authorities over the weekend conducted 24 roadblocks across the province of which 2 453 vehicles were stopped and checked. 

1 598 drivers were tested for alcohol and 43 were arrested for drunken driving. 

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said the highest reading was recorded in the Swellendam are on the N2 and the total fines that we issued was R213 450 we also tested a speed of 4 085 vehicles which we prosecuted 388 due to the fact that they exceeded the speed limit.

Africa added that the highest speed recorded in the Western Cape Province was 168km/h in 120 zone near Brecknefell

Meanwhile during the roadblocks three people were arrested in Swellendam one for being in possession of false documentation, another for excessive high speed and the third one for being in possession of dagga. 

One person was arrested in Brackenfell for assaulting a traffic officer. 

Over the weekend 16 people died on the province roads.  Seven pedestrian, one motorcyclist, five drivers and three pedestrians all died. 

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said the first one was a pedestrian in Hanover Park a pedestrian in Parow, Harare, Kraaifontein, Nyanga, Knysna and De Doorns.

Africa also said on Friday in Camps Bay a lost control of his vehicle and died in that accident and in Maitland there was also one vehicle lost control and he also died.

“We had an accident where the driver and two of his passengers died in that specific accident.

In Paarl we had an accident where a driver lost his life and in George we had an accident died.” Africa added.
