The Portfolio Committee on Police said it is deeply concerned about the brutal attack of a 50-year-old woman by police in Kraaifontein.

Committee Chairperson Francois Beukman said action needs to be taken against any SAPS member involved in incidents of brutality.

Beukman said incidents like this go against every code of policing and the violation of human rights.  Arrests need to be conducted in a manner respectful of one’s dignity.

“The incident in Kraaifontein was disconcerting especially as it occurred in the wake of the launch of the country’s campaign of the 16 Days of Activism of no violence against women and children” Beukman added.

The committee has called on community members to immediately report such incidents to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.

Meanwhile the IPID is also investigating the incident.
