NUM won’t support DA’s call regarding Amendment bill

The National Union of Mineworkers said it will never support the Democratic Alliance’s call to support the Labour Relations Amendment Bill that seeks to restrict violence strikes.

DA said in a statement that, if NUM truly is totally against strike related violence, they must take definitive action and publicly support the bill, which is set to be formally introduced in Parliament for debate in February this year.

NUM Spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu said the DA should be calling for other stakeholders who have found the framework agreement for a sustainable mining industry to sign it.

“We know that there are some stakeholders who have signed it, so it is therefore an opportunity for them to only call NUM to support the Labour Relations Amendment Bill.” Mammburu added.

Mammburu continues to say: “We also remind the DA that the NUM is not the only union in the mining industry in South Africa.”
