Eastern Cape police said on Sunday the bodies of four babies were discovered in a refrigerator in New Brighton, Mthatha.

Police received a tip-off on Saturday and had to break into the house because the owner was not there.

Four newborn babies were discovered in a freezer.

Spokesman Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said four newborn babies were discovered in a freezer.

Fatyela said the owner's backyard tenants told police that she was in Johannesburg attending a funeral.

Fatyela said no arrests have been made but they have arranged a meeting with the home owner once she arrives back from Johannesburg.

“An inquest docket has been opened” Fatyela added.
