The African National Congress
in the Western Cape has called for Mayor Patricia de Lille to be fired.
This follows several media
reports that alleges a city-contracted company had indirectly employed Hard
Living gangsters in Manenberg for security.
This as the area has seen gang
violence which flared up since Easter.
ANC’s Pat Lekker said the
Mayor knew about this because this from December last year. Nothing has been
said by the Democratic Alliance, they kept quiet as if this was all good and
well. In that light we say she must be fired.
Meanwhile in response the city
says it takes these allegations very seriously and an investigation is underway.
City of Cape Town Mayoral
Committee Member for Human Settlements Benedicta van Minnen says there is no
firm evidence to support these claims, everything is unfounded allegations at
this point.
Minnen said we have also
discussed this with the contractor Good Hope Construction, and they have
categorically denied anything of the sort and they pointed out such allegations
are simply rumours, that have been doing the rounds.
“She also added that it also
been pointed out that the labour used on site comes from the job seeker
database. The contract was prioritize in trying to employ residents from the
Cape Flats and also from the greater Maneberg community.
Minnen concluded by saying
that this is not surprising that the ANC is spreading these allegations because
they certainly do not want to hear that we are succeeding with this project upgrade.
