The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union said the resignation of South African Airways CEO Monwabisi Kalawe is a welcomed hope that the company will be led into safe and visionary hands.

Kalawe resigned this morning with immediate effect. This is after he was suspended last year pending the completion of an investigation into allegations of misconduct.

Satawu’s Refiloe Lepere says “we are very thrilled that he has decided to throw in the towel and not continue to stop his disciplinary hearing and overturn his suspension.

Lepere added tha “It must be noted that we know Kalawe is never a friend of the trade union, until therefore this resignation seems like a good contribution to our transformation and turn around strategy at SAA.

We hope that the Minister of Public Enterprise Lyne Brown can articulate the clear turnaround strategy for the airline in order to bring it back to its proper functionality, Lepere added.
