The Sex Workers Education and Advocacy Taskforce have welcomed Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa’s acknowledgment of sex workers at the Aids Conference currently taking place in Durban.

SWEAT’s Director Sally Shackleton said criminalisation drives sex workers into the margins and blocks access to services, creating an enabling environment for abuse, exploitation and stigma.

Shackleton said we are pleases that there was recognition that sex workers need to be targeted and we are also looking forward to this moving beyond taper and interaction.

Shackleton added that we services along with other organisations are being delivered to sex workers but we need increased support and we need wider coverage in South Africa for services to sex workers.

“We will be looking forward to seeing more action in this regard.” Shackelton concluded.
