Cape Chamber of Commerce Industry: Liquor abuse is a problem

The Cape Chamber of Commerce says, the proposals in the Liquor Policy Review amount to a bid by the Department of Trade and Industry and its National Liquor Authority to obtain greatly increased powers to intervene in almost every aspect of the liquor industry.

Chambers Chairwoman Jenine Myburgh says it is very difficult to avoid the impression that the DTI wants to control the supply of liquor and the industry as a whole, rather than deal with the problems of abuse.

Myburgh also said, “’We believe that we definitely require to solve the drinking and driving problems. But there should be other solutions as to how to do it. Possibly looking at more traffic officers or enforcements should be better.”
