The City of Cape Town’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities department has invested just under R10 million to light up soccer pitches and sports fields.

The City says, this investment will help improve safety and allow for the use of these facilities until much later in the evenings.

In addition the City says, the new lighting system will make it virtually impossible for vandals to damage the infrastructure.

City’s Mayoral Committee member for Community Services and Special Projects, Belinda Walker said, “We need lighting on many of our sports field. We wound get many more playing hours and the AstroTurf pitches that we have put in are designed specifically for long playing hours.

Unfortunately vandalism and theft make it very difficult to do this but now we are moving in the direction of vandal proof lighting. We are through a new technology. Some of it will be solar lighting.”
