Illegal racing duo hits the skids

The City of Cape Town’s Traffic Services arrested 116 suspects during operations this past weekend.

The City says most of the arrests were for drunk driving, but officers also collared 24 motorists for reckless and negligent driving.

This included a father and son who were caught engaging in an illegal street race along Klipfontein Road.

City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith explains:

“The Metro Police also had its hands full with numerous incidents and with one operation in Macassar they tried to arrest two suspects for illegal firearms and ammunition.

Whilst the officers were making the arrest, the rest of the public interfered and helped one of the suspects to escape.

They stoned the officer’s vehicle, but he officers still managed to arrest one of the suspects and confiscated a 9mm firearm and 33 rounds of ammunition.

When we see this kind of behaviour we get really worried about where the loyalty of the public lies.”
