Trade and Industry Minister
Rob Davies says that extreme measures have to be executed to curb increasing
alcohol abuse rates which annually costs the government R3.7 billion.
There is a proposal to raise
the minimum legal drinking age from 18 to 21.
Davies is convinced that
hiking the legal drinking age to 21 will cut death rates linked to alcohol
abuse.
He further says that there is
evidence showing this has worked in other countries.
