The
Department of Basic Education said that they have been overwhelmed with calls
from parents whose children couldn’t be registered because they are unable to
pay registration fees upfront.
Spokesperson
Elijah Mlanga said that this practice was unlawful for schools to deny pupils
placement in school if their parents could not afford to pay school fees
upfront. He advises schools to refrain from this particular activity as it
generates unnecessary tension between parents and schools, and creates a lot of
pressure to parents without the finance. Parents are urged to report these
unlawful practices to the nearest district or provincial education department
office.
Public
schools are set to reopen next week after the start of the new school year was
delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
