Eskom announced that stage four power cuts would continue
until at least Wednesday after workers failed to report for duty at various
power stations.
The power utility says power cuts are anticipated to
continue following delays in planned maintenance and repairs.
“As a result, unplanned generation losses have not been
reduced as planned, which has compelled Eskom to continue taking precautionary
measures to conserve generation capacity and safeguard plant from damage,’’
said spokesperson, Sikonathi Manthantsha.
“Adequate emergency reserves are crucial to assist with the
generation deficit while dealing with generating units that may trip owing to
unlawful action, and to compensate for the inability,’’ he added.
Eskom’s employees have gone on an unprotected strike, the
action comes after a deadlock in wage negotiations between Eskom’s management
and unions. Eskom's has warned that more
blackout misery is on the cards this week if the unlawful strike persists.
