A 20-year-old man from Delft has drowned at Strand Beach on Tuesday. The man was with his 17-year-old brother at the time.
The national Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesperson,
Craig Lambinon said eye-witness saw the pair experiencing difficulty in sea.
‘’At 14h08, Tuesday, 17 January, NSRI Gordons Bay duty crew
were activated following eye-witness reports of 2 persons in difficulty in the
surf at Strand Beach. CCTV camera monitors directed rescue services to the
location where 2 persons were in difficulty in the mid surf break.’’
Lambinon said lifeguards rushed into water and was able to
rescue a 17-year-old. He added the teenager was medically assessed by
paramedics.
‘’The casualties brother, age 20, was missing. During a
search, the body of the man was spotted under water on the sea bed.’’
‘’An NSRI rescue swimmer, deployed from the NSRI rescue
craft recovered the man onto the rescue craft. He was brought to the Strand
lifesaving club where paramedics applied Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation efforts,’’
added Craig Lambinon, NSRI spokesperson.
He said despite performing CPR, the man was declared
deceased.
‘’The body of the man, has been taken into the care of
Government Health Forensic Pathology Services Police have opened an inquest
docket,’’ said Lambinon.
