The Western Cape Government has set aside over R1.4 billion, over the next three years, to address the issue of gang activity among young people in the province.
According to the latest crime statistics, at least 39
children have been murdered in the Western Cape since January 2023. The Western
Cape’s Police Oversight and Community Safety MEC, Reagen Allen, said during the
same period in 2022, 19 children were killed.

gangs, the provincial department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, by
implementing several strategies such as after-school programs; getting
involved in sports and recreational activities; the promotion of arts
and cultural activities; providing educational support, vocational training,
and job placement services.
“Combatting gang-activity requires multi-governmental
cooperation… Keeping young people out of gang activity not only safeguards
their well-being and future prospects but also contributes to the overall
safety, stability, and development of communities, fostering a positive
environment for growth, opportunities, and social cohesion,’’ said Gillion
Bosman, DA Western Cape Spokesperson on Cultural Affairs and Sport.
