Today is World Day Against Human Trafficking. This year’s theme is "Reach every victim of trafficking and leave no one behind".
According to the United
Nations, there has been a decrease in human trafficking with 41% of victims who
managed to escape their ordeal reach out to the authorities on their own
initiative.
According to the Western
Cape's Social Development MEC, Sharna
Fernandez, 11 survivors of human trafficking accessed accredited shelter
services in the Western Cape. Most of the survivors, she says are from Gauteng,
who responded to a promise for work in Cape Town and ended up being sexually
exploited.
“Traffickers, often targeting
vulnerable individuals like those living in poverty, are smart and
manipulative. Women also participate in luring victims, often enticed by
lucrative employment opportunities. Be cautious when seeing job advertisements,
and walk away if unsure” says Western Cape Social Development MEC, Sharna
Fernandez.
