The City of Cape Town, as well as Western Cape Government held a meeting with taxi association, SANTACO, on Thursday afternoon. Mayor Geordin hill-Lewis invited SANTACO for discussions at midday, which they initially declined.
Hill-Lewis said he had hoped the parties would have had an
agreement following their meeting on Thursday. He said Santaco had pledged to
take the offer back to their team in Bellville.
Hill-Lewis and Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said they
could not go into details of the proposal out of respect to Santaco's
officials, who asked for time to consider it.
‘’Obviously, we would have hope that we
would get a final agreement, which we don’t have that as yet. We may, what we
think, unanimously feel is a very reasonable, very considerate proposal. It is
now up to them to consider it seriously. They have pledged to go back to
Belville to consult with their team, so hopefully, with any luck, we will have
agreement soon,’’ said Geordin hill-Lewis, Cape Town Mayor.
‘’Our first consideration in making the proposals is, and
will always be, the safety of our commuters in this city - and this province
for the premier - and with our minds on how we can keep commuters and people
who use taxis and other road users safe and make our roads safer at all times.
So our proposals are in that regard. And we sincerely hope that Santaco will
now be mature, accept a reasonable proposal and end this strike in the interest
to get back to some normalcy in the city and province," added Hill-Lewis.
