The South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of a secure boarder stating that it will help in combating cross-border crime. He presided over the Launch of the Border Management Authority (BMA) in Limpopo yesterday.
The BMA was formally established as a public entity in
April this year after being passed by Parliament in March 2020.
According to Ramaphosa, the BMA is tasked to ensure that
the country’s immigration laws are upheld and enforced.
In addition, the President says the BMA is a vital link in
efforts to harness the benefits of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Ramaphosa went on to hand over a sword to the Commissioner
of the BMA, Michael Masiapato, as a sign of the handing over of power.
“We are able to facilitate lawful trade at a greater scale
and more efficiently. This is becoming increasingly important as we work with
other countries in our region and elsewhere on the continent to increase
intra-African trade,” Ramaphosa said.
“As is the case in every sovereign country, foreign
nationals who seek refuge or wish to live and work in South Africa are subject
to immigration laws and regulations. The Border Management Authority is tasked
to ensure the country’s immigration laws and regulations are upheld and
enforced”, he added.
