Refuse collection services has resumed in Gugulethu, Philippi East/Lower Crossroads and Nyanga, following threats of extortion. In addition, services in Manenberg also resumed after gang violence subsided.
In Gugulethu, collections teams reported that they werebeing followed by vehicles of armed men; Two security guards were shot andkilled in Phillipi East, on 14 September, after they were assigned to escort
the City of Cape Town’s Urban Waste Management staff.

Twigg, thanked residents for their patience and understanding while the waste
collection services in affected areas were temporarily affected.
‘’The waste collection services in affected areas have been
reinstated under security protection. Residents are asked to please be patient
as we deal with the backlog. We appreciate residents’ cooperation during this
time.’’

continue even during such challenging times as much as possible. We are
committed to providing waste collection services while ensuring the safety of
our staff who are on the ground delivering these very services to communities.
We will work closely with safety and security teams to ensure our services can
continue,’’ added Grant Twigg, Mayco Member for Urban Waste Management.
