The latest number on how many people live in a house and how many people are residing in South Africa, will be announced on 10 October 2023.
In a statement, Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) said, the
Statistician-General, Risenga Maluleke, will hand over the Census 2022 report
to President Cyril Ramaphosa, in Pretoria.
According to StatsSA, 55.7 million are residing in South
Africa. Of these, 6.4 million are in the Western Cape (2016 data).
Census 2022 was the fourth population and housing count in
post-apartheid South Africa, the first being conducted in 1996, and subsequent
censuses being conducted in 2001 and 2011.
StatsSA said the population and housing census was
conducted in February 2022, and will provide comprehensive data on population
size, demographic trends, and other service delivery related information.
"Stats SA will be following the trend adopted by many
countries and data will be released in phases. For phase one, the Census 2022
launch will only cover reports and indicators at national, provincial, district
and local municipality level. Data will only be made available in the second
phase," it said in a statement.
Bush Radio News previously reported that the deadline for
Census 2022 was extended in the Western Cape, as not everyone participated in
the survey.
‘’Census information is essential for determining the
funding allocation to provinces and municipalities. Census data will provide
detailed information on where schools, clinics and houses should be built and
where electricity, water and sewerage infrastructure is needed," said
StatsSA, at that time.
