The City of Cape Town says that as much as its enforcement agencies saw a slight decline in arrests week on week, interpersonal violence and alcohol abuse tell a different story, especially when it comes to month-end.
Last weekend, the Public Emergency Communication Centre
(PECC) recorded 2 223 incidents, including 122 fires, 196 cases of assault, 51
cases of domestic violence and 82 road accidents.
This past weekend, there were 2 585 incidents – including
132 fires, 230 cases of assault, 73 domestic violence cases and 96 road
accidents.
In addition, a motorist was clocked doing 170 km/h in a 60
zone – one of more than 20 000 speeding offences recorded.
‘’These statistics offer a glimpse into the type of
behaviour that some among us deem acceptable, but also what many individuals
and households have to endure. It is likely that the actual picture is far more
grim, as not all incidents are reported to the same channels, or even reported
or detected at all. Alcohol and drugs are major contributing factors, placing
an enormous strain on our health, rescue and enforcement resources,’’ said JP
Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security.
‘’We are now officially into the festive season, so the
demands on our services will only increase, particularly as we count down to
Christmas and New Year. I want to appeal to the public once more, to err on the
side of caution, to be mindful of how their actions impact not only themselves,
but also those around them, and to please report any potential threats to
public safety to the City's Public Emergency Communication Centre,’’ he added.
