Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga has called on motorists to obey by the rules of the road.
The minister launched the 2024 Easter Road Safety Campaign in Mpumalanga on Wednesday, under the theme "Fika uphila" (Arrive Alive), which focuses on encouraging road users to exercise consciousness regarding their safety, ensuring they reach their destinations safely.
Traffic volumes are expected to increase over the next few
days as people travel to their respective holiday destinations.
Ahead of Easter, South Africans are also set to travel to
different destinations for the Human Rights Day weekend and school holidays.

Chikunga said the department has set a target to reduce
road fatalities by 15% over this period. In 2023, 225 people lost their lives on South African roads for the Easter weekend, with 185 fatal crashes. During
the same period in 2022, 161 fatalities were recorded with 135 fatal crashes.
Chikunga warned that officials will be out in full force on
key routes in Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State, the Western Cape and the
Eastern Cape.
Western Cape’s mobility MEC, Ricardo Mackenzie, reminded
road users of the importance of road safety for everyone
‘’Our Provincial Traffic officers will be out in full force
during the upcoming school holiday and Easter period, enforcing the law to
ensure the safety of all road users.’’
