Keep a close eye on schools this holiday, appeals WCED

An appeal has once again been made by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) for communities to keep a close eye on schools. Schools closed for the Autumn break on Friday.

Vandalism and burglaries are common during school holidays. In the December/January school holidays, the WCED reported 26 incidents of burglary and/or vandalism, affecting 24 schools.

Education MEC, David Maynier, encouraged community members to report any suspicious activities.

‘’This is an opportunity for our school communities to rest and recharge after a busy first term and to enjoy their break in a safe and responsible manner.’’

‘’We are subsiding holiday security at 464 of our schools over the break, but we need the support of our communities to keep our schools safe while closed. Please keep a close eye on our local school and report any suspicious activity to SAPS immediately. Quick reporting can make all the difference in deterring would-be criminals or apprehending perpetrators that have targeted our schools,’’ said David Maynier, Education MEC.
