Nearly 1 100 suspects arrested in March by LEAP officers

The Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) officers confiscated fourteen illegal firearms in March 2024. These include eight pistols, one revolver, and four zip guns. The areas where the confiscations took place were in Atlantis, Bishop Lavis, Delft, Gugulethu, Khayeltisha, Mfuleni, Mitchells Plain, Nyanga, and Philippi (Hanover Park).

LEAP officers work alongside other law enforcement agencies, such as City of Cape Town, Metro Police and SAPS. Officers are deployed in crime hotspot areas in the metro, including, Delft, Gugulethu, Harare, Khayelitsha Mitchells Plain, and Nyanga, amongst others

According to the Western Cape’s Police Oversight & Community Safety Department, since its inception in 2020, LEAP officer have recovered 578 illegal firearms.

At the same time, officers also arrested 1 097 suspects for an array of crimes, ranging from illegal firearms, dangerous weapons, and drugs.

“The continued role that LEAP plays to combat crime in the murder hotspot areas is highly significant, particularly since our aim is to halve the murder rate by 2029.  When we initiated the WCSP in 2019, we set out to ensure that SAPS’ hand would be strengthened in the fight against crime. As WCG, we have once again demonstrated our commitment to LEAP by allocating R 350 million for the 2024/25 financial year. I want to assure our communities that their safety remains our priority,’’ said Reagen Allen, Western Cape Police Oversight and Community Safety MEC.

Allen encouraged residents to continue working with LEAP officers, as this, he says, will assist in getting more criminals locked up.
